What the Trust does
The trust deed sets the goal of benefiting the community through the support and advancement of independent, quality ethical review. To do that, the Trust:
- Oversees the recruitment of new voluntary members for review committees including AREC.
- Provides training, capacity and capability building for the review of research ethics applications.
- Fosters awareness of ethical principles and practices in the research community.
- Collaborates with researchers to protect the interests, rights, dignity, welfare, health and wellbeing of participants and consumers.
- Gives due consideration to community views.
- Networks and collaborates with academic and community organisations.
- Publishes an annual report on the work of AREC.

Reviewers at arm's length
The Trust’s structure deliberately prevents payment to reviewers and chairs. That matters: the point of this committee is charitable service to community researchers who would otherwise be unsupported, and reviewers should have no financial stake in an outcome.
